We are Scott and Sarah Cherne, and along with our two boys, Grant and Lane, we are proud to share our family’s journey in the cattle industry. Our operation, Cherne Angus, is a family-owned and operated cattle business dedicated to raising high-quality Angus cattle, and we’re proud to be located in Guttenberg, Iowa, in the beautiful Driftless Area near the Mississippi River.
Prior to 2003, the Cherne Family ran around 120 commercial Angus cows, working to build a solid foundation for our operation. In the fall of 2003, Cherne Angus took a significant step forward with the purchase of 50 registered Angus females from Woodhill Farms. This move marked the beginning of a 20 year partnership with Brian McCulloh and Woodhill farms.
Our location in the Driftless Area is a key factor in the success of our operation. Nestled near the Mississippi River, we have access to a variety of high-quality forage and pasture production that allows us to raise cattle in a natural, sustainable environment. The region's rolling hills and rich soil provide an ideal setting for grazing, which is integral to the health and productivity of our cattle.
Our first bull sale came in 2005, when we sold approximately 13 bulls at Woodhill Farms' annual bull sale. Since then, we have steadily increased our sales numbers, and today, we are excited to say that we sell around 45-50 bulls each year.
We are particularly proud to announce that 2024 will be a milestone year for Cherne Angus as we host our very own bull sale, featuring around 60 quality bulls. This is a significant step for our operation, and we are eager to continue offering our customers quality breedstock that add value to their herds.
Over the years, we have steadily grown our herd to where we now annually calve around 240 Angus cows. Our breeding program is centered around producing functional, balance trait cattle that are well-suited for a variety of operations.
As we look to the future, our commitment to improving our cattle herd and providing top-tier genetics remains as strong as ever. With the support of our family, friends, and loyal customers, we are excited for what the years ahead will bring for Cherne Angus.
Thank you for taking the time to learn more about our family and our operation. We look forward to continuing to serve our customers and grow our business while maintaining the values of hard work, integrity, and passion that have guided us from the start.
